Romantic Symbolism in Howl's Moving Castle || Video Essay

But beneath the blonde and red hairstyles is a natural midnight black, which is Howl's natural hair color. This natural black represents an inner darkness in Howl's soul, which he previously concealed from the world through his flashy and fashionable blonde hairstyle. Sophie eventually causes Howl to embrace this natural black hair, and this represents the way in which she helps him to accept himself for who he is, darkness and all, thanks to the fact that Sophie shows him how to love him for himself.
