On August 1st, 1944 pilot Major Charles Carpenter searched for a field suitable for the operations of the L-4 Grasshoppers near Avranches, France. He stumbled upon a friendly unit pinned by enemy fire in front of a town they had to liberate. The Mad Major commandeered a Sherman tank and led an attack on the town. Several weeks later, during the Battle of Arracourt, he took out several Panthers and armoured vehicles in his Grasshopper nicknamed "Rosie the Rocketer", equipped with six under wing bazooka rockets. The engagement made Carpenter a legend, and he was given the nickname Bazooka Charlie. One of the main sources we used for the film is the excellent book Bazooka Charlie: The Unbelievable Story of Major Charles Carpenter and Rosie the Rocketer, written by James P. Busha and Carol Apacki.
