Figma Code Layers: The AI Design Tool Every UI/UX Designer Needs to Try!

If you’re a ui/ux designer using Figma, code layers needs to be on your radar. Why? It’s a window into what our design workflows will look like in the age of AI. Figma Sites is an infinite canvas. Figma Make allows you to generate designs and add interactions to those designs. Code layers turns is the bridge. You can turn any layer in Figma Sites, into a Figma Make-powered ui & interaction that is siloed from the rest of the website. Now this is a huge shift in AI design because it’s an infinite canvas. You can pull out pieces of a ui, prompt it multiple times in different ways to explore and iterate, then take the best option and continue. How do you do this? 1. Take anything in your design (text, a frame with sub-layers, or a simple rectangle) and press “Make code from design” 2. Prompt it with whatever changes you want. 3. Refine it with more prompts if necessary. You can always pull out the original designs or duplicate and revert before doing it again in a different way. Properties are super valuable! In your prompt, if you are specific and add numerical value things like “5px of blur” or “300ms ease transition” Figma Make will likely add properties that allow you to control, test, and refine the way the interaction/design renders. You can even connect these to variables which allow you to make sites that are dynamic from section to section. It’s hard to know exactly what our roles will look like in a few years, but I think this is one of the first steps to seeing what design iteration will look like: 1. Design something 2. Prompt it in 3 to 4 ways for interaction or design tweaks 3. Pick the best one 4. Repeat. Have you tried playing with code layers yet? #figmadesign #figmatutorial #uiux #figmaambassador
