Join Curators Lesley Marchessault and Joe Fiorello for a gallery talk on the artist Taro Yamamoto, in conjunction with the exhibit at PAAM, September 28-November 25, 2012 Taro Yamamoto was born in 1919 in Hollywood, CA. After serving in the US Army during World War II he attended UCLA, where he studied with Glenn Wessels, a former student of Hans Hofmann. Excited by the creative possibilities of non-objective art and the abstract expressionist movement, Yamamoto traveled from California to New York City in 1950 and studied at the Art Students League and the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts between 1951-55. From the 1950s on Yamamoto maintained an abiding connection with the Cape, establishing a home here and exhibiting at PAAM and various galleries over the next 40 years. His work ranges from pure abstraction to the playful semi-abstract studies he created of Provincetown, to colorful action paintings on handmade papers. His work can be found in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Hirshhorn Museum at the Smithsonian; the Miami Museum of Modern Art, and many more public and private collections throughout the US, Europe and Asia.
