Filmed on Wednesday, October 23 2024, I drive around Sandusky, OH to see what's going on. The town's name derives from the Wyandot Native American word "saundustee" meaning "water". The area has been a center of trading and fortifications since the 18th century. The English, French, and Americans have all built forts in the area. Sandusky was officially incorporated as a city in 1824. The town was a stop for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad and many would travel across Lake Erie to reach freedom in Canada. Railroads reached Sandusky in 1835 creating rapid development. In 1846, the population was 3,000 and by 1880 it had reached 16,000. In the early 1900s, Sandusky was a center for paper manufacturing. As the 20th century progressed, the city became a tourism destination. Sandusky is home to Cedar Point amusement park which is America's second-oldest amusement park. The first ride, a water toboggan which launched riders into Lake Erie, opened in 1890. Electricity was installed in the park in 1891 and the first roller coaster opened in 1892. It stood 25 feet high and had a top speed of 10 miles per hour. Today, the park has 17 coasters which is America's 3rd largest collection and is the only park in the world with six roller coasters with heights over 200 feet. Sandusky has multiple ferries which transport people and vehicles to the Lake Erie Islands. The city hosts semi-annual "barge parties" where boats from as far as Toledo and Cleveland arrive to dock up their boats together inside Sandusky Bay. #drivingtour #ohio #sandusky
