This is one of the main challenges for Europe now - combining militarization and maintaining an open, liberal society with a policy of migration solidarity. In practice, this is almost incompatible. Here's why: 1. Militarization requires consolidation, mobilization of society, increased control, while public sentiment begins to shift to the right: "we are against the threat", "we need to defend ourselves", "it's time to close the borders". 2. Migration solidarity is based on humanism and openness - the belief that Europe should help and accept, even if it is economically and socially difficult. 3. Security and culture - large parts of the population already associate migration with increased crime, terrorist attacks, and a threat to national identity. When militarization begins, such fears only intensify. 4. Budget pressure: militarization requires huge investments. They are difficult to combine with the costs of integrating migrants, especially if the economy is stagnating. Therefore, Europe can try to maintain both courses - but in reality there will be a shift towards “fortification”: more borders, more control, filtering of migrants by need (labor resources, qualifications), and not by humanitarian considerations.
