Hitler's Last Desperate Naval Move That Ended in Complete Disaster

HMS Onslow and her convoy were on the brink of annihilation in the freezing black void of Arctic waters. Robert Sherbrooke’s small destroyer was ambushed by a massive German heavy cruiser, her opening salvo shredding Onslow’s bridge. Dozens lost their lives in a flash. Sherbrooke, now blinded and gravely injured, clung to command. With just six destroyers against a German force boasting a heavy battle cruiser, a pocket battleship, and six destroyer escorts, survival seemed impossible. But Sherbrooke refused to let the convoy and its precious cargo sink. Blind yet unafraid, he ordered an attack. Smoke screens billowed, desperate maneuvers buying precious moments for the merchant ships to flee. Frantic calls to HMS Sheffield and Jamaica, the British cruisers meant to protect them, painted a dire picture. The cruisers had overshot by 30 miles after a storm scattered the convoy. As shell after shell tore through the frigid air around HMS Onslow, Sherbrooke knew his destroyers could not withstand the German onslaught forever. His only chance lay in buying precious minutes—holding out until HMS Sheffield and HMS Jamaica could reach them. Until then, his destroyers would have to weather this storm alone, no matter the cost.
