A one-minute video overview about the how deflector shields work in the Star Wars canon universe, their abilities and characteristics as depicted in the Star Wars movies. So, how do Deflector Shields work? Deflector shields, were energy fields that would protect starships, battle stations, and armies from enemy assault. Many starships with limited carrying capacity, such as the X-wing and Y-wing Starfighters, came equipped with a shield generator too weak to power an effective full-body deflector shield. Instead, power was diverted to the Shield Projector; a system that allowed the pilot to manually concentrate their available shield coverage to different areas of the starship. As a result, the Rebellion would strategize battle methods that limited an enemies’ angle of attack, such as the Battle of Yavin trench run, allowing them to concentrate the full power of their shields on either the front, or the back of their starship, depending on the formation. Capital Ships with powerful shield generators, like the Imperial Class Star Destroyer would utilize three radial shield sensor arrays to provide protection across the entire hull of the starship. Large space structures that lacked the ability to generate their own shields could utilize a deflector dish and generator located on a nearby planet or moon, such as the second Death Star utilized the forest moon of Endor. Also, Most shields don’t protect from suicidal pilots.
