This week’s episode is a little bit of everything, as we try to squeeze in as much as we can before the busy season really hits. I start off finishing the foundation for the blacksmith shop, getting it leveled and packed down while Kelly gets to work on the forge itself. Using some scrap metal and a welder, she pieces together a homemade blacksmith forge—true island-style ingenuity. Once the forge is together, Kelly heads up to the goats to feed and water them. With temperatures still swinging back and forth, keeping fresh water has become a bit of a struggle. The goats’ water trough keeps freezing overnight, making even the simple daily chores a little tougher. The next morning, everything changes again. We wake up to a fresh dusting of snow and a drop in temperatures. It’s classic Newfoundland spring—warm and sunny one day, cold and snowy the next. Kelly heads back up to the goats’ pen, breaking through the ice again and talking about some of the daily challenges that come with off-grid farming through these unpredictable seasons. Later on, I tackle another project that’s been long overdue. I rebuild the sides of Pat’s old buggy—the little cart we pull behind the trike to haul things around the island. Years of hard work have beaten it up pretty good, so it’s time to give it some fresh life.
