At the heart of this server lies the AMD Genoa 9004 and AMD Turin 9005 processors, which utilizes the SP5 socket. We’ll guide you through optimal configurations and recommend the best CPUs for various applications. The server boasts 24 DDR5 DIMM slots, supporting up to 3TB of memory with speeds reaching 4800MT/s, 5600MT/s, and 6000MT/s. There is a catch though when it comes to the speeds depending on what processor you are using. When you have the Intel 9004 Genoa CPU in your socket, you can get 4800MT/s, but with the 9005 Turin processor you can get 5600MT/s or 6000MT/s modules. There is mainly one type of memory that is compatible with this Gigabyte server. That is ECC Registered (RDIMM), which will allow you to install twenty-four 128GB modules for a maximum of 3TB of memory. Storage flexibility is a key highlight when it come to the R183-Z96-AAD1, featuring 4-Bay 3.5” LFF drive trays and 4-Bay 9.5mm drive trays that can take NVMe, SAS, and SATA interfaces. This results in having five different type of drives you can install such as a SATA SSD, SAS SSD, NVMe SSD, SATA HDD, and SAS HDD. From a speed standpoint, you can get 6Gb/s for your SATA SSD, 24Gb/s for your SAS SSD and 32Gb/s for your NVMe SSD. With the HDDs you will get the usual speeds, SATA HDD running 7.2K RPM and SAS HDD running 7.2K RPM, 10K RPM and 15K RPM. Bear in mind that with the higher speeds for SAS HDDs, the ball bearings will wear out so its important to have a spare on hand in case you need to replace that drive. As for the max sizes per drive you can Install, SATA SSDs will max out at 7.68TB, SAS SSDs will reach 30.72TB, NVMe SSDs will scale to 61.44TB, SATA HDDs will go up to 24TB and SAS HDDs will go to 24TB. NVMe SSDs by far are the fastest and provide much better scalability than any of the other drives on our list, so NVMe is the winner once again! Now when we talk about the 9.5mm SSD drives we can get the same speeds as before, SATA SSDs with 6Gb/s, SAS SSDs reaching 24Gb/s, and NVMe SSDs achieving 32Gb/s. The true difference in the 9.5mm drives is the scalability, SATA SSDs reach 7.68TB, SAS SSDs and NVMe SSDs go up to 15.36TB.
