Objective: to understand capillary action Materials Needed: ~ 2 container ~ Water ~ Food Coloring ~ Rope Step 1) Fill one of the container with water and then add food coloring of your choice. Step 2) cut a piece o string that would fit inside the both containers. Step 3) Place this string inside the water jar and inside the empty jar. Now observe. HOW DOES IT WORK: The vascular system is a group of tubes known as arteries that run through out the entire body. As blood leaves the heart its leaves through Arteries. These arteries are large tubes because they have to take on the extra pressure from the heart. These Arteries are like a freeway system full of billions of blood cells. As the blood makes it way further from the heart, arteries branch off into vessels smaller tubes similar to roadways which allow millions of blood cells to pass through. Vessels are smaller then artier because they have to keep the pressure high enough to flow through the body and back to the heart. Blood vessels bring blood back to the heart. Every cell in your body sits next to a microscopic tube known as a capillary. These tubes are so small you can think of these tubes as single car road ways as these tubes only allow 1 blood cell though at a time. Capillaries are the connection between Arteries and Vessels. If you lined up your entire vascular system in your body end to end they would stretch 100,000kms or 2-1/2 times around the earth. Inside your veins you have one way values which are used to stop blood from backing up or pooling this allows the blood to keep flowing around the body. When you are sitting and relaxing it takes your blood 40secs to make it from the heart and back. When you are exercising it only takes 10 secs to make the same trip.
