Richard Linklater is the rare director who has a wealth of cinematic knowledge yet subtly weaves his influences into films that are entirely his own. During an On Cinema talk at the 55th New York Film Festival, following the Opening Night world premiere of Last Flag Flying, he discussed his early cinema-going days with moderator Kent Jones. In the wide-ranging talk, he presented clips from Eraserhead, Raging Bull, Barry Lyndon, and more, and he talked about meeting Robert Altman and his love for The Long Goodbye. The 18-day New York Film Festival highlights the best in world cinema, featuring top films from celebrated filmmakers as well as fresh new talent. The five-person selection committee is chaired by New York Film Festival Director Kent Jones and includes esteemed critics, curators, and programmers. Since 1963, the New York Film Festival has brought new and important cinematic works from around the world to Lincoln Center.
