It served as the Indonesian capital for 2 years during the Indonesian National Revolution and counts as an important centre of Javanese culture and art. Java Island is also known for its vast amount of (active) volcanoes, especially Merapi which just lies a few kilometers north of Yogyakarta. After Yogyakarta we drove to the rural side to a mountain village at mount Sumbing top a Nepali like village.
