Մինչև 1991-ը Հայաստանը երկաթուղային ուղիղ հաղորդակցություն ուներ իր հարավային քաղաքների՝ Մեղրիի և Կապանի հետ։ Երևան-Բաքու երկաթուղին ձգվում էր ադրբեջանական Նախիջևանի ինքնավար հանրապետության տարածքով։ 1991-ին, երբ սկսվեց Ղարաբաղյան պատերազմը, Ադրբեջանը փակեց երկաթուղային հաղորդակցությունը Հայաստանի հետ։ Արդյունքում Ադրբեջանը կորցրեց նաև երկաթուղային կապը իր էքսկլավ Նախիջևանի հետ։ Երկաթուղին անցնում էր Հայաստանի հարավային սահմանագծով՝ շուրջ 40 կմ։ Հայաստանի հարավային սահմանի՝ Արաքսի երկայնքով ձգվող այս երկաթգիծն ու ինժեներական ամբողջ համակարգն այսօր չկա։ Միայն խոշոր թունելներն ու հարթեցված հողային ճանապարհն են հուշում, որ այստեղ եղել է երկաթգիծ։ Այս տեսանյութը պատրաստվել է OPEN Media Hub-ի աջակցությամբ Եվրամիության տրամադրված ֆինանսական միջոցներով։ Until 1991, Armenia had a direct railway to its southern cities of Meghri and Kapan. The Yerevan-Baku Railway was stretched across the territory of Azerbaijan’s Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic. In 1991, when the Karabakh war broke out, Azerbaijan closed the railway with Armenia even though it lost its railway connection with its exclave Nakhijevan. About 40 km of the railway went through the southern border of Armenia. Today, this railway and the entire engineering system that stretches along the southern border of Armenia, along the Araks River, is nonexistent.
