Did you know your kidneys filter all of your blood up to 25 times a day? No matter your age, or whether you have kidney disease, getting to know your kidneys can help you take steps to prevent or slow the progression of kidney disease. Watch this video to learn how you can protect these two bean-shaped organs that work around the clock for you. Visit the NIDDK website for more information about kidney health: https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-info... Transcript: Your kidneys are vital to your overall health, yet you may not know what these bean-shaped organs do for you. Did you know your kidneys can filter all of your blood up to 25 times a day? For an adult, that’s around 37 gallons. Your kidneys also make urine and remove waste and extra fluid from your body. They balance water, salts, and minerals. They also produce the hormone that makes red blood cells. By keeping this balance, your nerves, muscles, bones, and other tissues work properly. If your kidneys are struggling, they will work harder to keep up. You could lose up to 60% of your kidney function before you notice any problems. That’s why it’s important to start taking steps to keep your kidneys healthy today. People can get kidney disease at any age—even young children. But we can help protect our kidneys by taking these steps… Manage diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease by working with a health care professional. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes each day. Invite a friend to join you. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night. Children and teens may need more. Try to eat healthy foods and stay hydrated. Quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake. Manage stress and ask for help if you need it. A health care professional may know of resources in your community. It can take time to build healthy habits, but even small changes are worth it. Visit a health care professional and get to know your kidneys. Learn more at niddk.nih.gov.
