Then Steven Spielberg was interested, but his schedule was too full, so he offered it to a popular actor who was spectacularly making his directorial debut with a remake of "A Star Is Born." That's how Bradley Cooper came to direct, star and co-write "Maestro," the story of acclaimed composer/conductor/pianist Leonard Bernstein, whose Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning credits include "West Side Story," "Candide," "On the Waterfront" and more. Now, "Maestro" has quickly become a top contender in this year's movie award season. The film impresses right out of the gate, as we see an aging Bernstein in the 1980s, playing the piano for a documentary film crew. The camera goes to a close-up of the composer's face, revealing the incredible physical transformation of Cooper into the composer. It's an amazing make-up job aided by seamless prosthetics.
