WordPress Menu Tutorial - How To Create & Integrate WordPress Menus | WP Learning Lab A great feature of WordPress is being able to make menus inside the admin dashboard. Believe it or not, this functionality was not always part of the WordPress core. Pretty much all themes created today integrate with the WordPress menu creation system and in this WordPress menu video I'm going to show you how to add menu to WordPress. First you have to navigate to the WordPress menu area: hover over Appearance and then click on Menus. On the page that loads you will see two tabs at the top: Edit Menu and Manage Locations. First we'll take a look at the Edit Menu section. If you haven't created a menu yet click on Create A New Menu. You will be presented with a field called Menu Name. Name your new WordPress menu with a descriptive name so that you know what it is for. This becomes important when you are creating multiple menus. Once you've entered a name click on Create Menu to the right. Now you will have a blank menu. Let's add some links to it. To the left of the Menu Structure area you will see a list of options. In a default installation you will have the following options: 1. Pages 2. Custom Links 3. Categories You may have plugins or a theme installed that add to this list. When you click on the pages option you will be able to check the box beside the pages currently in your WordPress site and you can add them to your nav menu in WordPress by clicking the gray Add To Menu. You can also add Custom Links. These are usually links to external sources that don't exist on your site or you can use this to link to a specific blog post if desired. You can also use the Custom Links to create a non-clickable link in your menu. This is common when you want to create a top-level menu item like "Services", but you don't have a dedicated Services page. Instead you have a page for each service and those become drop down items. The create drop down items you simply drag and drop them below other menu items so that there is a visible indent. You can have multiple nested drop down menus. Finally, in the default WordPress menu creation area you can add categories to your WordPress menu. The process to do so is the same as for pages. So if you've ever wondered 'how do I add menus to WordPress' now you know. If you've already created a menu this is also the area where you customize WordPress menu and change WordPress menu. After you're done with your menu make sure you click the blue Save Menu button. Now if you click on the Manage Locations tab at the top of the page you will be able to assign menus to specific locations in your theme. Be sure to click Save Changes before you leave that page.
