Bridging the Digital Divide in Education

In June 2020, a girl in Class 9 from Kerala committed suicide for not being able to attend online classes as the family didn’t have any facility for her to attend the classes! In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, students all over the world have been forced to shift to online education. While the shift has been easier for some students, the underprivileged are adversely impacted due to a lack of access to electronic devices and internet services leading to unequal access to education. It is reported that only 12.5% of Indian households with students have access to the Internet and 25% of students are unable to connect as they do not have an available electronic device. These percentages are highly amplified when we only consider poor communities. While the students are finding it difficult to access education, the teachers are also forced to run a digital classroom with no training whatsoever. This predicament has greatly impacted the education sector. Sahaara Charitable Society has been involved in the field of remedial education over the last 26 years enabling thousands of poor children in red-light communities and government homes attain Grade Level Competency. In the present scenario, we are: Enabling poor students to remain connected to the learning process through online and offline modes of teaching Providing electronic devices and internet packs to extremely poor students so that they can continue schooling Giving digital literacy and training to teachers and students so that they can safely adapt to the new technology and mode of teaching Raising awareness on Handwashing practices and other WASH Behaviors to the community at large The needed support at the right time will help bridge the digital and educational divide.
