Their first encounter in April 2018 ended with Aleem winning by unanimous decision in an eight-round bout at 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. Bates had previously alleged that his cut man, supposedly friendly with Aleem's team, had tampered with his water to give Aleem an advantage in their initial fight. Aleem, dismissing these claims, ensured there were no such controversies in their rematch. The 10th round was particularly one-sided before Rosato's intervention. Bates managed to connect with a counter left hook in the ninth round, but Aleem had controlled the match, pressuring Bates and out-landing him in the eighth round.
