Tensions rose on Tuesday along the border between Georgia and the separatist Abkhazia region after Georgia accused Russian peacekeepers of apprehending and beating three of its policemen in the village of Ganmukhuri, which is a neutral security zone dividing the two sides. The head of the Georgian regional police, Tengiz Gunava said checkpoints had been strengthened to ensure that the population was safe. "We have information that the Abkhazian side has also strengthened its check points near the border," he said. Abkhazia and another breakaway region of South Ossetia, have run their own affairs since they drove out Georgian troops in the early 1990s, developing close relations with Russia, which has deployed peacekeepers in both regions. Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to return the regions to his government's control, and has pushed for replacing Russian peacekeepers with other forces under U.N. Control. Russia has dismissed Georgian calls for the withdrawal of peacekeepers saying that they were deployed on a joint decision of the Commonwealth of Independent States, an alliance of ex-Soviet nations. Moscow also argued that the peacekeeping mission was part of the peace agreements that ended the wars in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
