Who hasn’t heard the song “Magic” by the band Pilot? The 1974 track was written by band members Billy Lyall and my guest today, David Paton. Sadly, Billy passed away in 1989. During the summer of 1975 the song was hugely popular in Canada and the US, but also did well in the UK, Australia & the Netherlands. The song is still played today on various stations and formats and has been covered many times over the years. David Paton is a Scottish bassist, guitarist and singer/songwriter. He was a founding member of Pilot, along with Billy Lyall, Ian Bairnson (who recently passed on April 7th) and Stuart Tosh. The band released 4 albums before calling it a day in 1977. Other hits that charted were “January” and “Just a Smile”. David went on to work with the Alan Parsons Project from 1975 to 1985. Over the years Mr. Paton has worked with other artists as well as releasing his own solo material.
