There are a lot of opinions out there about how to properly adjust the truss rod. I studied under a luthier that has been in the business for decades. He taught that you can adjust the truss rod as much as necessary to get the neck where it needs to be. If that requires 2 full turns to get the neck adjusted properly, then that’s what you need to do. You won’t break your neck. I’ve been working on guitars myself for almost a decade now and I have never broken anything because of a truss rod adjustment. This is always the first adjustment to check because having the truss rod adjusted is the foundation to getting a great setup. So how do you know if your truss rod needs to be adjusted? Here’s what you are looking for. For a guitar to play at its best, the neck needs to have relief. Relief is simply a slight curvature in the neck. I’ll show you how to measure relief so you will know if you need to adjust the truss rod or not. You don’t need any tools, although a capo can be very helpful. First, tune your guitar up to pitch. Then fret the first fret of the 6th string or you can put a capo on the first fret. Then with your other hand, using your pinky, press on the fret where the neck and the body meet. Doing this turns your string into a straightedge. Now what you want to do is feel for a gap between the top of the fret and the bottom of the strings. There should be a slight gap between .020” and .030”. You can use feeler gauges or a machinist ruler to measure this. If you have either of those tools, this is where the capo comes in handy. If you don’t have either of them, don’t worry. There is no perfect amount of relief. If there is too much relief, turn the truss rod clockwise. If there is not enough relief, turn the truss rod counterclockwise. Step 2: Adjust the bridge First, lower the bridge until the strings make a buzzing noise when played through your amp. Then raise the bridge just enough that the buzzing goes away. Most guitars when setup with a low action will have little buzz when played without an amp. But when you play with an amplifier, you can’t hear it.
