In this video on isotonic, hypotonic, hypertonic solutions/ nursing and nclex review of IV fluids and electrolytes; I discuss how osmosis occur between various compartments of the cell depending on the tonicity (concentration) of IV fluids which can be isotonic (equal concentration), hypotonic (lower concentration causing cell swelling), and hypertonic (higher concentration leading to cell shrinkage/dehydration). I also discuss about distribution of electrolytes (for instance, sodium is more abundant in the extracellular fluid, while potassium is more abundant in the intracellular fluids), and various IV fluids and how to classify it as isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic solutions. You will learn about nursing review of isotonic IV solutions, hypotonic IV solutions, and hypertonic IV solutions including how to select it based on the condition of the patient; for example, we do not give lactated ringers (LR) solution to patients with kidney disease because LR contains electrolytes like potassium and patients with kidney problem have difficulty excreting potassium and if given LR, it can result in hyperkalemia; side effects or what to watch out for during administrations and also some considerations or contraindications. After watching this video, as a nurse or nursing students; you should be able to classify any types of IV solutions as either isotonic, hypotonic or hypertonic confidently! #nclex #nursing #nclexreview #nclexstudyguide #nursingexam #internationallyeducatednurse #healthylifestyle #pharmacology #nurses #registerednurse #nclexprep You can watch some of my other videos here: • NURSING & NCLEX REVIEWS Please leave your comments.
