Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the book. Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine, Edited by Sarah J. Hale and Louis A. Godey. Issued 1871 Philadelphia, by Louis A. Godey Complete year- 12 months January- December. 582 pages. With 12 folding hand colored fashion plates showing latest Parisian dress styles. Also numerous steel engravings, many wood engraved images, couple sheets colored paper, etc. All fashion plates present, contents appear complete. Period 3/4 fine leather binding, spine gilt lettered with date and patterns to raised bands, marbled boards. Textblock clean, tight and overall very well preserved. Nice example. Light signs of usage and age, joints are a bit rubbed or scuffed, but as the pictures show, still a very handsome looking old book. The leather remains supple. Complete with 12 beautiful fresh looking engraved & hand colored fashion plates, one for each month, also with a profusion of charming and frequently well executed steel engraved and wood engraved plates, plus many line drawings, various types of folding plates, color litho plates, patterns, topics of interest, music, travel, real estate, art technique, Santa Claus, Christmas, themes, etc. A wonderful and monumental illustrated mid-19th century book aimed at the rapidly emerging more urbanized middle class American woman, with a broad range of images on many topics aimed at self-cultivation and edification. An uncommon survival in this condition, nicer than typical in the marketplace. Measures c. 9 3/4" H x 6 3/4" W. [V1966].
