Chapter 11 tv 008 - "Short Circuit"

Everyone has something going on. Everybody suffers from something or has weird darkness in their family or a past or regrets or something that weighs on them. That is what compelled me to make Chapter 11, and in a way I see Short Circuit as an extension of that, just sharing his story. This is what happened. Professional surfing doesn’t protect you from real human problems. And I think it’s cool to talk about it because, for me, when I see a basketball player or… anyone for that matter talk about how they suffer from crippling anxiety I’m like “Yessss! I know how that feels!” It makes you feel like you are not alone. You’re not crazy. Other people feel like that too. I got the name Short Circuit from one of the tracks he sent me. And because of his self destruction, I got this picture in my head of a brain slamming into a free standing brick wall… I didn’t know if it should be a graphic or what, and then I thought maybe a comic… a robot wakes up (Droid duh) and slams a brain into a wall… then i decided it had to be an animation. Dylan Graves linked me up with a guy named Joel Fox that does crazy digital manipulations for Weird Waves. I grabbed a bunch of my kids dolls and model train stuff and made houses out of cardboard boxes and went to his house… he was tripping cause he’s used to working with detail oriented people and I was pretty much just “anything that works.” I just wanted the gist of it to come across… Robot steals a brain and smashes it. I can’t really speak for him on this, but from my experience, it’s a weird thing growing up as a pro surfer, your identity is based off surfing well and getting coverage for it, being praised by fans and sponsors. Magazine photos and video parts and comp results are embedded in your self worth. When that starts going away, you can get lost and fall into… I don’t know, a crisis. Which was the premise of Chapter 11, I think. That’s how I saw it, flinging shit at Quiksilver because I felt they had pushed me into that crisis but in hindsight I had pushed myself into that crisis by putting so much goddamn pressure on myself. "Give us humans a break, we all make mistakes." (Excerpts from Stab interview mostly regarding Short Circuit)
