What Is Mixed Voice? For Beginner Singers | 30 Day Singer

For most singers, it’s a coordination that might not come naturally and does need to be trained. Hi, I’m Camille, singer & voice teacher with 30 day singer, and these are my 3 best exercises for mixed voice. 1. Tongue-out MA I’m starting with this because it’s effective, easy to learn and doesn’t take much skill. Stick your tongue out and say MA. Now siren or slide up and down on that same sound. You may feel your tongue wanting to retract, but keep it relaxed. Notice also the quality of the tone. It’s very bright, almost catty. This brightness is intentional, and it’s caused by both the vowel we’ve chosen (A) and the tongue position. So please don’t worry about the tone being annoying or ugly - it’s just a tool to help you smooth out this transition. 2. Bratty sounds (WHY, NAY, etc) This is especially helpful for singers who tend to flip into head voice, and for singers who are a little quiet or shy. Approach this as talking on pitch, and use that bratty sound as training wheels. When you’re able to sing in the middle of your range without flipping into head voice, then you can experiment with less nasal quality or less “brattiness”. You might start with an extra 'bratty' tone then gradually smooth it out. 3. Rich UH (ONE) The word ONE or WHAT is really helpful for guiding your voice into mixed coordination, due to the narrow OO onset and the rich, balanced UH vowel. For singers who tend to get shouty or “stuck in chest voice”, that OO vowel helps them from using too much pressure or an overly wide vowel. Let’s use the same melodic pattern as the last exercise, this time on the word ONE or WUH as in WHAT. Especially if you’ve been struggling to establish your mixed coordination, I hope these exercises help you and set you up for a smoother transition from low to high when you sing! 0:00 - Intro 0:55 - Exercise 1 5:27 - Exercise 2 8:59 - Exercise 3 12:03 - Outro 5 Easy Tips on How to Find Your Singing Voice -    • 5 Easy Tips on How to Find Your Singi...   Daily Exercises for Great Singing -    • Daily Exercises for Great Singing | 3...   Avoid These Singing MISTAKES -    • Avoid These Singing MISTAKES | 30 Day...   5 Minute Vocal Warm Up Exercises -    • Beginner ALTO Vocal Exercises - Easy ...   Beginner ALTO Vocal Exercises - Easy 10 minute warmup -    • Beginner ALTO Vocal Exercises - Easy ...   If you liked this video, why not subscribe?
