Angela Rayner is planning to set up a council on Islamophobia, tasked with drawing up an official government definition for anti-Muslim discrimination. But some senior political figures are worried that the Government could adopt the same definition as the Labour Party, which has been described as so widely drawn it curbs free speech. One of the people sounding the alarm is Dr Taj Hargey, a moderate Imam and scholar who is “deeply concerned” about the definition. He tells Kamal and Camilla it will close down open discussion of Islam and give extremists “a get out of jail free card”. Dr Hargey also explains why he says Islam has been “captured” by extremism and what liberal Muslim leaders can do about it. A senior Muslim Labour politician has warned Angela Rayner against adopting the party’s definition of Islamophobia “if it really wants to tackle discrimination”. Khalid Mahmood, who served as MP for Perry Barr in Birmingham for more than 20 years, said he was concerned that the Deputy Prime Minister’s new council on Islamophobia would rubber-stamp a definition previously adopted by the party. It follows Monday’s disclosure by The Telegraph that Ms Rayner had plans to create such a body and is lining up Dominic Grieve, a former Tory attorney general, to lead it. The 16-strong council will provide advice to ministers on tackling Islamophobia and help advise on drawing up an official government definition for anti-Muslim discrimination, according to sources. The group's ultimate goal is to help foster a more inclusive, fair, and tolerant society by addressing the issues of Islamophobia and encouraging constructive dialogue between communities. They may also collaborate with Muslim organisations, charities, and other stakeholders to build strategies for reducing harm caused by prejudice and hate. The group used a 2018 report to define Islamophobia as “rooted in racism … a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness”. The wording has been adopted by organisations including the Labour Party but has proven highly contentious amid fears it could stifle free speech and amount to a blasphemy law. Mrs Badenoch urged Sir Keir Starmer not to enshrine the definition in law last month and claimed that the 2018 report also “said talking about sex groomers was an example of Islamophobia”. The APPG’s 2018 report, Defining Islamophobia, said “to characterise Muslims as being ‘sex groomers’” would be one possible example of anti-Muslim prejudice that met its definition. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Islamophobia is focused on addressing issues related to Islamophobia, which refers to prejudice, discrimination, or hostility against Muslims and Islam. The group aims to examine and raise awareness about the impact of Islamophobia in the UK and explore ways to combat it. Following Mrs Badenoch’s comments, the APPG said the sentence referred to “the collective smear and trope being used against all British Muslims”. It said there was “nothing racist or Islamophobic about addressing crime or protecting victims” regardless of the perpetrator. The group’s statement added: “The whipping of far-Right conspiracies on this issue has already taken lives, including one in this country.” MPs group behind controversial Islamophobia definition on brink of collapse https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/...
