They are so, so important because they are how we experience our content... I used to have a 4k monitor, but it was so large that it was difficult to see what was going on in the games... unless I sat 6 feet away, in which case I was defeating the purpose. A smaller 4k monitor can look crisp, but you have to turn on resolution scaling, which removes the extra desktop real estate you'd be getting... Then there's 3840x1440 ultrawide, which is a very popular resolution for gaming... but 1440 is a bit too wide for productivity imo. That's where 3840x1600 comes in.
