Which Candle Extinguish First | Burning produces carbon dioxide | Gas expands on heating and rises

If we cover this jar over this candles which one will extinguish first? The tallest candle or the shortest candle? lets find out in this activity. For this activity we need a jar and three lighted candles. We shall cover these candles with the jar and see what happens. As you can see the tallest candle extinguishes first followed by the shorter one and then the shortest one. Why does this happen? Burning produces carbon dioxide which is heavier than other gases in air. This means that the shortest one should get extinguished first. But as the carbon dioxide is being produced, it is also heated up due to the flame. This hot gas expands and has lower density which then accumulates at the top of the jar. Thus the tallest candle experiences deficit of oxygen first followed by the shorter one and finally the shortest one. This overall effect is due to the combination of expansion of hot gases and oxygen deprivation which results in extinguished candles in that order.
