Australian Academy of Science calls for legal system reform after Folbigg report

The Australian Academy of Science is welcoming the Folbigg inquiry report and the decision by former NSW chief justice Tom Bathurst KC to refer the case to the Court of Criminal Appeal in a bid to have Kathleen Folbigg’s four convictions quashed. Ms Folbigg was pardoned for the murder and manslaughter of her four children by the NSW government in June this year after 20 years in jail. An inquiry into her case led by former NSW chief justice Tom Bathurst KC found there was reasonable doubt in the evidence used by the prosecution, leading to her pardon. “This second inquiry into the convictions of Kathleen Folbigg have demonstrated to me … loud and clear how important it is that we create a science-sensitive legal system,” Australian Academy of Science Chief Executive Anna-Maria Arabia told Sky News Australia. “The Kathleen Folbigg inquiry benefitted from the Academy of Science acting as an independent advisor because we were able to suggest experts from the right fields of expertise to come forward and to be asked questions appropriate to their expertise. “For me, it is a remarkable demonstration of the sort of law reform we need to ensure that this is not a once-off case.”
