“The Head & the Load” van veelzijdig kunstenaar William Kentridge verwijst met zijn titel naar het Ghanese spreekwoord ‘the head and the load are the troubles of the neck’ en is de sensationele openingsvoorstelling van Holland Festival 2019. De muziek is van Phillip Miller – met wie Kentridge al vaker samenwerkte – en Thuthuka Sibisi. Gregory Maqoma tekent voor de choreografie. Centraal staan de bijna twee miljoen Afrikanen die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog als dragers zijn gebruikt door de Britten, Fransen en Duitsers, en die een groot deel van de slachtoffers vertegenwoordigen. In dit fragment gaat presentatrice Nadia Moussaid tussen de repetities door met een aantal acteurs in gesprek. "The Head & the Load" by versatile artist William Kentridge refers with its title to the Ghanaian proverb 'the head and the load are the troubles of the neck' and is the sensational opening performance of Holland Festival 2019. The music is by Phillip Miller - with whom Kentridge has worked before - and Thuthuka Sibisi. Gregory Maqoma is responsible for the choreography. The focus is on the almost two million Africans who were used as bearers by the British, French and Germans during the First World War, and who represent a large proportion of the victims. In this excerpt, presenter Nadia Moussaid talks to a number of actors between rehearsals. ----- Naar aanleiding van het 70-jarig jubileum (2017) en het 75-jarig jubileum van Holland Festival (2022) hebben het festival en de VPRO onder de naam ‘Holland Festival Parels’ een duurzaam online platform ingericht. Het publiek vindt hier korte televisiefragmenten uit en over producties, die het Holland Festival de afgelopen zeven en een half decennia in Nederland presenteerde. Deze televisiefragmenten van diverse publieke omroepen zoals de NTR en VPRO zijn vaak eenmalig op televisie te zien geweest. Ze zijn nu als hommage en als online archief beschikbaar gemaakt. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary (2017) and the 75th anniversary of Holland Festival (2022), the festival and the VPRO have set up a sustainable online platform under the name 'Holland Festival Gems’. Here, the audience will find short television excerpts from and about productions presented by the Holland Festival in the Netherlands over the past seven and a half decades. These television fragments from various public broadcasters such as NTR and VPRO have often been shown once on television.
