HISTORY New ways of living came to South Africa about 2,000 years ago. Until that time, human communities had survived by gathering plant foods and by hunting, trapping, and scavenging for meat, but with the introduction of agriculture—arguably the single most important event in world history—people began to make use of domesticated animals and plants. The first Portuguese ships rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. Both the British and the Dutch challenged the Portuguese control of the Cape sea route from the early 17th century. The Dutch and British took over the Administration of the country and South Africa finally got her independence in 1994. PEOPLE AND CULTURE South Africa has a population of close to 60 million people. This population comprises of Black people, Mixed race, White and those of Asian descent. The Khoikhoi and Sans are the indegenous people in the country. The black people have four major groupings and these include; The Nguni(Swati/Swazi), Sotho-Tswana, Tsonga and the Venda people. All these cultures co-exist well in the country. ECONOMY The South African economy was revolutionalized after the discovery of Gold and diamond in the 19th century. Today, South Africa is one of the leading Gold producers and exporters in the world. The economy mainly depends on the private sector.
