1. Introduction - How to build Multilib Linux From Scratch (MLFS) r12.3-833 Demo

I start my journey through the process of building the new Linux From Scratch project called Multilib Linux From Scratch (MLFS) with an overview of what MLFS is. In this series of videos I demonstrate how to install Multilib Linux From Scratch (MLFS) using revision r12.3-833 of the rolling-release MLFS book. I use the same LFS-12.3 that I built in previous videos (watch these here:    • LFS 12.3 - How to build Linux From Sc...  ) as the host Linux operating system. I also use the same hardware as I did for the LFS 12.3 build, and show how I re-partition the disk to make room for MLFS. The full build process is captured throughout this series. The standard LFS will build to 32 bit or 64 bit, matching the CPU architecture that LFS is being built upon. This means that when complete, LFS will only execute code matching that architecture and is sometimes called a native build. A Multilib Linux From Scratch system can not only compile and execute 64 bit code but also 32 bit code. This is made possible by compiling certain key programs and libraries at least twice during the MLFS build: once for 64 bit and once for 32 bit. Obviously this means that MLFS takes a little longer to build than a standard LFS build. As with the standard LFS build, all software used in MLFS is freely available, open source software and all components are compiled from source code.
