Bernard Hopkins vs John David Jackson - Highlights (PERFECT EXECUTION)

Interestingly, both fighters were reportedly weighing in around the Light Middleweight limit of 154 although this was a 160 pound world title fight. Hopkins 30(23)-2-1, Jackson 35(19)-2. In December 1988, Jackson became the inaugural WBO Light Middleweight Champion with an RTD7 victory over Lupe Aquino. Between April 1989 and December 1992, he made 6 successful defenses of the title before moving up to 160 pounds. In October 1993, John edged southpaw Reggie Johnson via a very close UD12 to bag the WBA Middleweight Title. However, he was stripped of the title by the organization in May of the following year due to an authorized participation in a non title bout against journeyman Jeff Johnson. As for The Executioner, he earned his 1st world title opportunity in December 1994 against Segundo Mercado for the vacant IBF World Middleweight Title in Quito, Ecuador. Hopkins was floored (twice) for the 1st time in his pro career but rallied in the late rounds. They fought to a 3 way draw after 36 minutes of action. Both fighters rematched in April 1995 in the United States, and this time Bernard triumphed via TKO7 to become the IBF World Middleweight Champion at 30 years of age. Between January and July 1996, he made 3 successful defenses and John David Jackson was slated to be his 4th defense. Note: John was defeated via a questionable SD10 in his last fight against fringe contender Abdullah Ramadan but due to the fact that the fight was competed at 168 pounds the IBF decided to retain his Jackson’s as the No. 1 Middleweight contender. Entering the fight, the 13 year veteran Jackson had notable wins over Lupe Aquino, Davey Moore, Steve Little, Reggie Johnson & Tyrone Trice. On the other hand, Bernard had victories over top oppositions in Segundo Mercado & Lupe Aquino. For the first 6 minutes, both fighters were very careful; Hopkins trying to set up his jab and time his right hand on his elusive southpaw challenger who often went in and out with his awkward style to land shots whilst waded away from the champion’s firing range. Although there were not a lot of action in the first 2 rounds but Jackson was arguably more effective, as he threw and constantly dipped down to avoid Bernard’s deadly right hand, held and worked him towards the ropes to halt him from working in the inside. More action took place in the 3rd stanza, with Hopkins starting to find his range and connect with more punches. In rounds 4 and 5, John was shook several times by Bernard’s right hands as he struggled to stay on his feet and began to lose momentum due to his low right hand as well as due to his knack to trade instead of fighting slickly as he did in the first 9 minutes. It was a similar mistake that caused his defeat to Jorge Fernando Castro in December 1994, where he was outboxing the rugged Argentinian in most rounds and well ahead in the scorecards but made the mistake of trading with the stronger albeit less skillful fighter, which caused him to be knocked out and lost his bid to regain the WBA title he was stripped of earlier in the same year. For a few brief moments in the 6th, Jackson was able to get the better in some exchanges but Hopkins would resume control in no time and with a barrage and shots upstairs and downstairs, he scored a knockdown with 45 seconds left in the round. John was barely able to hold on as his legs were not under him but somehow made it to the bell. In the 7th, Jackson rallied to score some shots but The Executioner returned the favor in spades with relentless pounding to the body and head from the ring center to the ropes. The challenger was utterly defenseless and nearly knocked through the ropes at one point which prompted referee John Femia Jr to step in and halt the merciless assault. With this win, Hopkins retained his IBF World Middleweight Championship in stunning fashion. Hope you guys enjoy this highlight of one of The Executioner’s best wins and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE, stay safe and keep punching!
