Abo Tbileli & Abesadze Street 4K Walk, Tbilisi, Georgia

Today's walk in Kalas Kvemo Ubani. We start at Prusi Moedani - Bread Square. It is a small square (30x10 m) in Tbilisi, located in the historic Old Town district. The square is where several streets converge: Jerusalem Street, Lado Asatiani Street, Grigol Khandzteli Street, Abo Tbileli Street, and Betlemi Street. One of the oldest squares in the city, the area of Bread Square is marked on the 1735 map drawn by Prince Vakhushti of Kartli. The early historical buildings along the street (densely built-up on Vakhushti’s map) were completely destroyed during the invasion of Agha Mohammad Khan in 1795. Residents were killed, taken into slavery, or dispersed to other regions. Life in the area began to revive only in the mid-19th to early 20th century, following Georgia’s incorporation into the Russian Empire in 1805. Many historically significant buildings were never rebuilt — including a mosque that once stood on Bread Square. Abo Tbileli street was marked on the city plan of 1851 as Bolshaya Krivaya Street and then as Shelkovnikov Street. Major General Begbut Shelkovnikov participated in the Caucasus War, the Polish Campaign of 1863, and the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–1878, during which he helped liberate the city of Sukhumi from Turkish rule. In the 1950s, the name of Marcel Cachin was given to this street. Cachin played a significant role in the People’s Front in France between 1934 and 1938 and took part in the French Resistance against the Nazi German occupation of France during World War II. Cachin is buried at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Currently this street is named after a martyr and patron saint of Tiflis, Abo Tbileli. Arab by origin, Abo arrived in Tbilisi in 775. The city was under the rule of Arab caliphate at the time; however, Abo converted to Christianity in 781 and began to preach in Abkhazia. In 782, he returned to Tbilisi to teach Christianity to Arabs. On order of a caliph, Abo was arrested and executed on the Good Friday crucifixion of God in 785. Abo Tbileli was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church. No 6 Abo Tblileli - traditional yard and Art Nouveau style are merged in this house built in the end of XIX century. In the hall there's an interesting frescoes on the walls. No 4 Abo Tbileli has decorated wrought ironwork and letters G, M and B - initials of the house owner — however, they were welded upside down during last renovation. Present Abesadze Street was called Catholic Street or French Street in the early 19th century, because the Catholic church had been located there. After Soviet rule was established in Georgia, the street was renamed May 1 Street, in honor of International Labor Day. On October 21, 1991, in the Tbilisi war, a local cardiologist Gia Abesadze did an act of self-immolation in Tbilisi’s Rustaveli Avenue. He sacrificed his life for the idea of unity of Georgian society, torn apart by political feud. This street has carried his name since 1993. Abesadze, 10 - This building, built in 1875, used to host a synagogue. For a long time, after a fire broke out in the late 19th century, the edifice stood empty. Only in the 1920s the May 1 Laborers’ Club moved into this mansion after significant reconstruction works. Samepo Ubnis Teatri (King’s District Theatre) is located here since 1997. It was founded by film and theatre director Merab Tavadze and Iza Gigoshvili, a renowned actress and the winner of Shota Rustaveli award. Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary was built in 1804 not far from a private house, where between 1760 and 1800 Catholic missionary monks held worships. They returned after a five-year exile from Georgia, ordered by King Teimuraz II of Kartli. In 1804, missionaries were removed and leadership over Catholic matters was given to Diocese of Tiraspol. Building was renovated in 1870 with the funds of a well-known Georgian industrialist Konstantin Zubalashvili, who attended this church. Hall church building is constructed with elements of Neo-Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles. Enjoy the walk, please like, subscribe, comment - that means a lot to me! 🩵 Like my videos?
