Ken Guest describes ethnicity as per Cultural Anthropology. The young lady describes her ethnicity as an African American. She also applies the definition of origin myth to her ethnicity that she identifies with. She recalls an example of situational negation of identity. This would cause someone to assimilate to another identity that line up with dominant group. Ethnicity is a sense of historical, cultural and sometimes ancestral connection to group of people who are imagined to be distinct from those outside the group (Guest 240). She also refers to a work by Ivan Van Sertima an Anthropologist and linguist who taught at Rutgers University. As she answers what origin myth she is familiar with. Hopefully we all recognize more origin myths as we begin to educate ourselves more history and recognize the writers of it. Ask your self: are you a member of an imagined community?
