Danny “Swift” Garcia defended his WBA, WBC & The Ring Light Welterweight Championships against Erik Morales aka “El Terrible” in a rematch 7 months after their 1st encounter. Prefight records; Garcia 23(14)-0, Morales 52(36)-8. In July 2012, he successfully retained his WBC Light Welterweight Title in his 1st defense against Amir “King” Khan where he also captured the WBA Super World Light Welterweight & The Ring Magazine Light Welterweight Titles via TKO4. 3 months after he dethroned King Khan, he went on to face Morales (who turned 36 a month earlier) in a rematch with his WBA, WBC & The Ring Light Welterweight Titles on the line. Entering his 61st pro bout, Morales who was a former Quadruple World Champion at Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Featherweight & Light Welterweight had defeated top oppositions such as Remigio Daniel Molina, Armando Castro, In Jin Chi, Wayne McCullough, Paulie Ayala, Marco Antonio Barrera, Jose Luis Bueno, Carlos Hernandez, José Alfaro, Hector Sanchez, Jesus Chavez, Angel Sanchez, Daniel Zaragoza, Kevin Kelley, Manny Pacquiao & Guty Espadas (2x) while unbeaten 24 year old Garcia had notable wins over Nate Campbell, Kendall Holt, Amir Khan & Erik Morales. In contrast with their 1st bout, Garcia had little to no troubles against the weathered legend who looked every bit his age from the opening bell despite putting up his best efforts against the younger man. In rounds 1 & 2, both fighters exchanged and connected at near equal measure but the champion’s right hands to the solar plexus & left hooks to the liver were particularly efficient in slowing Morales down. In round 3, Garcia’s body work started to pay dividends as he was able to land upstairs and downstairs effectively whilst taking minimal punishment from the fading challenger. With 5 seconds left in the round, he landed a big right hook that badly hurt Morales who wobbled his way to the wrong corner after the bell. In round 4, Morales was decked with a gargantuan left hook that spun him around which prompted his corner to step into the ring as referee Benjy Estevez Jr waved off the bout without a count. After the defeat, Erik Morales hung up his gloves with a final record of 52(36)-9 after an illustrious 19 year career that spanned across 3 different decades & 6 weight divisions. “El Terrible” is widely recognized as one of the Greatest Mexican Fighters of All Time along the likes of Miguel Canto, Carlos Zárate, Juan Manuel Márquez, Vicente Saldivar, Rubén Olivares, Salvador Sánchez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Rodolfo Casanova, Ricardo López, Baby Arizmendi & Julio César Chávez.
