Promptly responding to the calamity, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Odisha Chief Minister Patnaik swiftly reached the accident site to assess the situation. They were briefed by railway officials about the severity of the incident. Rescue operations were immediately initiated, with multiple entities joining forces to provide aid and support. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed seven teams, while the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) contributed five teams. Additionally, 24 fire service units, local police personnel, and numerous dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to save lives. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Indian Army also stepped in to assist in the rescue operations, aiming to extricate trapped passengers and provide urgent medical attention. The incident occurred when approximately 10-12 coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed near Bahanaga Railway Station and intruded into the opposite track. Tragically, another train traveling on the same track collided sideways with the derailed coaches, leading to further derailment and exacerbating the scope of the disaster. Expressing their heartfelt condolences and grief, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed their sympathies to the affected families. As the nation mourns the lives lost, efforts to investigate the exact cause of the accident are underway. This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers, while highlighting the need for continuous improvements in railway infrastructure and stringent safety measures.
