Asthma Pathophysiology (Plus CRITICAL THINKING Points!)

In this video, we're walking through the pathophysiology of asthma, PLUS the key NCLEX® points you need to know about it to pass your nursing school exams. We'll break down asthma pathophysiology into three steps. The first step is the trigger. Asthma triggers can vary from person to person and include pollen, poor air quality, pet dander, cigarette smoke, and perfume. Once triggered, the immune system starts an inflammatory response. This response includes three things: increased mucus production, edema (fluid buildup), and airway constriction (bronchospasm). These three effects together make it difficult to breathe. The last step is reduced airflow due to airway constriction. This reduced airflow causes wheezing, difficulty breathing, and coughing, which are the common symptoms of asthma. And don't miss out on the free study guides or joining the NMC to learn more about asthma and med surg! Let's dive in!
