(5 Jan 2022) China's city of Harbin, famous globally for its annual snow and ice festival, has for a second year been forced to curtail many events due to fears that it could help spread COVID-19. Harbin's signature tourist attraction, the Ice and Snow World, remains open, but the number of visitors has decreased since it opened to visitors on Dec. 24 and remains far fewer than before the outbreak of COVID-19. Traditional activities that come with the festival every January, including ice sculpture competitions, ice swimming and ice wedding, were cancelled again this year. "The impact (of COVID-19) is huge," said Li Wenxiang, a 70-year-old retiree from Harbin. "People who wanted to come are scared off and here we are afraid the virus will be brought in," he added. Visitors are requires to scan QR codes at the entrance to prove they have not been to any mid or high risk areas in order to enter the venue. "The festival costs a lot of money and without tourists it is impossible to sustain, therefore they only keep the main part," said Li. With the Beijing Olympics beginning Feb. 4, China is doubling down on measures to prevent any new outbreak that could affect proceedings. China's northwestern city of Xi'an has been under lockdown since December 23, with more than 1,600 cases found.
