The knock sensor measures the vibrations and timings of the combustions inside the engine. The knock sensor is used to detect so called engine knock, which is the sound caused by the abnormal combustion of the fuel air mixture in the cylinder. It is important to monitor this because engine knocking can cause severe damage to the engine. When the knock sensor detects frequencies that are in line with engine knocking it alerts the ECU which can then adjusts fuel and timing parameters to prevent the engine knocking. A malfunctioning knock sensor can activate the check engine light and may cause newer cars to go into limp home mode. Another symptom of a faulty knock sensor is obviously engine knocking, because the sensor isn’t working the ECU does not adjust parameters to stop knocking. Due to this you may also get decreased performance and fuel economy, if your engine starts to experience knocking.
