It's take just over a year but the Switch emulation scene on Android is still alive and kicking. ~~~~~ Hi! Don't forget to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and hit the "Thanks" button on this video, if you can, and join our channel community here - / @explainingandroid Video Description ~~~~~~ Good evening, everyone, and welcome back to Android News Byte. Today, I wanted to talk a little about how the Switch emulation scene has evolved since Nintendo tried to kill it. Last year, it looked like Nintendo delivered a fatal blow, effectively killing off the two biggest names in the scene: Yuzu and Ryujinx. For a while, it felt like game over. But I'm here today to tell you something absolutely incredible: Switch emulation is not just alive, it's thriving! #android #android15 #android14 #emulation For those who haven't followed closely, let's rewind a bit. Yuzu and Ryujinx were making massive strides in Switch emulation. Yuzu even dropped an Android version in May 2023, and while it was a novelty at first, things really kicked into high gear with the update that added NCE, aka Native Code Execution. NCE was a game-changer. It allowed Android devices to run some Switch code natively, leading to huge performance jumps. Games that were once slideshows suddenly became playable! It felt like Switch emulation on Android finally had a real future. But then, in early 2024, Nintendo did what Nintendo does best: they lawyered up. A lawsuit against Yuzu's developers led to a swift settlement and the project's shutdown. Citra, the beloved 3DS emulator from the same team, also vanished in the fallout. And Ryujinx wasn't far behind. By October 2024, it too was gone. But if there's one thing the emulation community is, it's resilient. It didn't take long for Yuzu forks to start popping up. Initially, many were just copies, but then came Citron, the first fork that actually offered new features, better compatibility, and real performance gains. This victory didn't last long though, and out of Citron's ashes came Eden, a brand new fork built by many of the same talented developers, but with a clearer vision and fresh step forward, away from the drama that had been building. Eden is definitely still in its early days, with its first public build dropping less than two months ago, but it's already quite ambitious. No matter which Yuzu variant you choose, a huge part of the performance gains and bug fixes still comes down to the turnip drivers. These unofficial, community-built GPU drivers are a labor of love, and they've steadily improved over the years as well. Meanwhile, a new challenger appeared from a different corner: Kenji-NX. Built on Ryujinx's codebase, it trades raw performance for accuracy. On older phones, that might not work out, but if you've got a powerhouse like a Snapdragon 8 Elite, it's another story entirely. And here's the ultimate irony: the Nintendo Switch 2 launch actually helped boost emulator performance! Right before its release, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe got a massive update that converted its Wii U-era 32-bit code to 64-bit. Now, we have to talk about the elephant in the room: legality. Nintendo has, grudgingly, admitted that emulation itself is legal. However, they are not happy if you're playing Switch games anywhere other than on an official cartridge, on a real Switch. They've even started bricking Switch 2 consoles that so much as touch a flash cart! Their message is loud and clear: don't mess with their hardware. But fortunately, developers have learned from the Yuzu takedown. So far, modern emulators steer clear of copyrighted files entirely. This means you need to bring your own firmware, keys, and games, ideally dumped from your own modded Switch. This shifts the legal responsibility directly to the user. Despite Nintendo's best efforts to wipe it off the map, all they've really done is push the scene to decentralize and evolve. I can't believe how far we've come. The Switch emulation scene, especially on Android, is a testament to the power of community and innovation. It's a true 'cease and persist' story. Summary ~~~~~ 1. Intro [00:00] 2.
