16. I'm Still Standing (Elton John - Live In Detroit: 9/12/1984)

After listening to the show at Alpine Valley and reading all the hilarious comments by users (especially Mr. Willy Willy himself - “ncf1”), I felt that I needed to get out of the crazy house, stop medicating myself, and get back to reality! After getting my bearings straight, I’ve decided to re-upload a gig from my neck of the woods! This is an upgrade compared to previous versions that have been featured on this channel since it contains additional songs and the quality is slightly better. There is also a great atmosphere heard on this recording with the audience members around the taper providing moments of amusement. Thanks to the efforts of “EltonStuff,” this upgraded version of the show is a much better listen compared to how it used to be! Compared to the previously available recording from Alpine Valley, this is quite a different show on all fronts as Elton and the band sound much more together musically and “with it” mentally. While not a faultless gig by any means, it showcases some great musicianship and I wish that the show was complete since the available performances show promise for an overall great show. While sounding a bit rough early on, Elton’s voice is pretty strong at this show and he delivers the songs much better when compared with the Alpine Valley performances. By “Candle In The Wind,” his voice is settled in and is able to deliver some great renditions of songs. While not up to the level of the August shows, Elton is still able to conjure up some inspired piano playing and he sounds nowhere near as intoxicated as he did at the Alpine Valley show. Now, time to dig into these performances! “Tiny Dancer” has Elton sounding pretty rough in spots, but at least he still is able to phrase the song well and the band are in much better shape when compared with the Alpine Valley performance. “Levon” has a great Davey solo and Elton sings the Madman Across The Water classic very well despite still sounding a bit rough around the edges. “Li’l ‘Frigerator” is an energetic performance from the band, but Elton misses the first line in the final verse and doesn’t hit all of the high notes with as much precision as other versions. “Rocket Man” has solid vocals from Elton (although not the cleanest delivery in spots), but the improvisational section is fantastic and unique as Elton plays a lot of bluesy piano licks which sounds awesome against the rhythm section. “Candle In The Wind” is a very strong performance and Elton belts the ending embellishment out in a way that’s not too dissimilar to his European Express self. “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” is a strong performance from everybody involved and Elton sounds like his European Express self in some spots. “Who Wears These Shoes” from this show is the earliest known recording of it, and it’s quite an interesting version as the musicianship is a bit loose in places (compared to later versions) along with the ending getting extended with the band trying to figure out on how to end the song! “Sad Songs (Say So Much)” features Elton turning up the more aggressive singing as his rougher tone makes appearances throughout the performance. “Bennie And The Jets” is full of amusing moments during the main bulk of the song with the phrasing being randomly thrown around like a toy. There is also a hilarious moment where something goes awry with the trigger that repeats Elton’s piano at the end of the solo section, and it sounds completely off. Concluding this section, “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word” has some great falsetto notes and is generally a good performance! “Philadelphia Freedom” has Elton forcing his voice in spots, but generally sings the song pretty well. “Blue Eyes” sounds strong from everybody involved. “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” has Elton flubbing lyrics and singing with plenty of overdrive. “Kiss The Bride” has Elton sounding rough in spots, pushing his voice, and singing some of the phrasing in the choruses like he would do in 1989 (although it sounds better here). “Too Low For Zero” is a great version with Elton sounding much better compared with Alpine Valley, and the piano solo also sounds more inspired when compared to the previously circulating gig. “I’m Still Standing” has Elton aggressively delivering the song, showing off his growl/overdrive in the choruses, and Davey playing a unique solo. “Your Song” has a different take on the introduction and Elton sings the classic hit single mostly well (even hits a high ‘C’ at the end like he did on a few of the European versions). Concluding this show, “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” has the band having trouble trying to figure out to begin the song proper (since Elton is late). After getting over the rough beginning, the rest of the song is performed well with Elton using a ton of overdrive in spots and there is a great energy throughout the performance! ENJOY!!! Note: My mother attended this show!
