About this video:- Rumtek Monastery, also known as the Dharmachakra Centre, is one of the most significant and largest monasteries in Sikkim, India. Located about 23 kilometers from Gangtok, it is perched on a hill, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes. Here's an overview of its history. Founding in the 16th Century:Rumtek Monastery was originally built in the mid-16th century by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje. It served as the main seat of the Karma Kagyu lineage in Sikkim. Destruction and Reconstruction:The original monastery fell into disrepair over the centuries. In the 20th century, the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, chose Rumtek as the site for a new monastery.He fled Tibet in 1959 following the Chinese invasion and established the new Rumtek Monastery in 1966. It was designed as an exact replica of the Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet, the traditional seat of the Karmapas. Spiritual Center:Rumtek serves as a significant hub for Tibetan Buddhism and houses the relics of the Karmapas. It is a center for meditation and study of Buddhist philosophy.It is also the headquarters of the Karma Kagyu lineage in exile. Sacred Art and Architecture:The monastery's architecture is a blend of traditional Tibetan design and modern construction techniques. It features ornate interiors, murals, and thangkas.The Golden Stupa within the monastery enshrines the relics of the 16th Karmapa. The monastery has been at the center of disputes over the recognition of the 17th Karmapa. These disagreements have sometimes led to tensions within the Buddhist community and local authorities. Rumtek Monastery attracts pilgrims and tourists from around the world.
