Special from Tashkent: In 1995, Uzbekistan created the position of Ombudsman, who serves as the Uzbek parliament's special representative on human rights. IN an exclusive interview with VOA’s Navbahor Imamova, Ulugbek Muhammadiev, who has held this position since 2015, says his powers have dramatically increased with recent laws. "So have my duties and responsibilities," Muhammadiev adds. His office of less than 20 staffers receives hundreds of grievances every week from citizens, who complain about systematic injustices - political, economic and social. The Ombudsman now regularly monitors detention centers and prisons around the country. The Ombudsman must also deal with issues related to Uzbek citizens abroad. "The driving force, and perhaps the most important development and factor [in our work] now, is the public opinion," Muhammadiev says. "We cannot ignore what we hear from people every day. The pressure on us from mass media, social media and rights groups is more intense than ever. The system is working hard to meet the needs of the people. There is no going back in these reforms that are gradually changing the country."
