According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the theoretical global potential for OTEC is estimated to be between 5,000 and 20,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year, which is several times larger than the current global electricity demand of around 26,000 TWh per year. Assuming an average of 2.5 people per household, this would require approximately 4 billion homes. On land, it would require an area of approximately 1,600 square kilometers, or about 0.006% of the total land surface of the Earth. However, if the homes were built on the ocean’s surface, it would require approximately 1.1% of the total ocean’s surface. The ocean is also a major source of fish and seafood, providing an estimated 20% of the world's animal protein. This includes both wild-caught fish and seafood, as well as fish and seafood produced through aquaculture. While land-based agriculture is still the dominant source of food globally, there is potential for aquaculture to expand and provide more food from the ocean.
