The Mondrian Initiative 2024 Resident Emanuele Coccia and curator Béatrice Grenier initiated 'The Laren Dialogues': conversations taking place with protagonists of the near future about rethinking the planet and its form. Among their guests over the course of 2024 were Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu (Amateur Architecture Studio) and Aziza Chaouni. Shu and Wenyu founded Amateur Architecture Studio in 1997 in Hangzhou, China. The office name references the approach an amateur builder takes - one based on spontaneity, craft skills and cultural traditions. Rather than looking toward the West for inspiration, as many of Shu and Wenyu’s contemporaries do, their work is rooted in the context of Chinese history and culture. Exemplary is their project ‘Tiled Garden’, using 66,000 recycled tiles salvaged from demolition sites. The work process preferred by Aziza Chaouni Projects (ACP) integrates community stakeholders in order to consider their objectives and to build capacity within them. ‘Design Your Dream School’ in Sierra Leone, where students get the chance to think and design along with the team of ACP.
