Despite its reputation around natural resources, when it comes to coal Alberta has been rather careful, especially when compared with their neighbour British Columbia. Starting in 1976 the province protected the eastern slope of the Rockies, and the surrounding foothills from the vast majority of coal development. In 2020 the government rescinded the 1976 coal act, opening up the Rockies to potential coal development. Then, due to intense public backlash they reversed their decision. Now the current government is in the process of creating a new way forward for coal in the province, already approving a number of projects in the mountains. Technology has changed a lot since the 70s, and coal mining isn't what it used to be. But can Alberta and its regulator keep coal companies from polluting their waterways and destroying their iconic landscapes? Or will coal companies get their way in the province?
