There are no paved roads or even dirt tracks in these mountains and valleys. The pastures used by these tribes lie on the mountain slopes themselves, leaving them no choice but to follow the same ancient paths as their ancestors and move their livestock from the cold highlands to the warmer lowlands. This arduous and rugged journey begins in the eastern Zagros Mountains near the town of Bazoft, in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, and ends on the western side of the range, near the town of Lali in Khuzestan Province. Each day, they set off around 4 a.m. and travel until about 10 a.m., when they take a break. In the afternoons, from around 4 to 7 p.m., they cover a shorter distance to reach their next overnight resting point.
