Why do some women choose a midwife instead of a doctor?

Sometimes women choose midwives for non-specific reasons. Sometimes it's because I'm on their insurance panel or I'm a female. Some people are seeking nurse midwives for their care in particular. We offer a different kind of care. I think women have been searching for the kind of care that is personal, and that means something to them, and isn't rushed, and it isn't abbreviated. Midwives tend to spend more time with their patients than physicians do. I'm sure you can find a lot of physicians who spend a lot of time with their patients. I'm not trying to say that that's the vast difference. But, we spend a lot more time with education and about the options they have throughout their health care, whether they are pregnant or not pregnant, what they want during pregnancy and childbirth and what they don't want, and things that are specific to their particular case. We do a lot of the same things. There's a lot of overlap in what we do. I'm not a surgeon. I don't do surgery. If my patients need surgery, then I refer them on to the physician. During labor and birth, if my patients need something that is outside of my scope of practice, I have a great consulting relationship with the physicians I work with, and we take care of the problem. And I don't just say, "good luck and God bless, see ya later." I assist with all the surgeries and all the care, and I assist for continuity of care. Why is more time spent with a nurse midwife? I think that's because it's just the nature of what we do. I know physicians have busy schedules, and sometimes they have a surgery schedule, and an office schedule, and they schedule more patients per day than I would. I block out more time for each patient. I think it's important, and things that are maybe are not related to health, but will certainly impact pregnancy or their lives, whether they're pregnant or not - stresses in their lives, job changes, the number of children they have, their role as a woman, and their family - those things impact their health. You may not ever ask the question that's really important, whether or not they are safe in their relationship, or whether they have the resources they need. It doesn't necessarily happen up here, but it is - you ask the question, "Are you eating enough?" If your resources are limited, and you're giving your food to your children, and you're not eating, and you're pregnant - that impacts your pregnancy and your health, so I need to know about those things. So I spend a lot of time digging around, and asking about their personal lives too, and really forming a relationship. When they trust me, it makes a better relationship, and they are able to get the most out of their health care dollars.
